It is Friday......This Week's Best and Worst Wines

In the second edition of the new Friday feature highlighting the best and worst wine I had this week I thought I'd mention something you might actually find useful for Thanksgiving. I really like Pinot Noir as a really nice pairing with the very diverse fare on Turkey Day. I also like dry rose but I know most of you won't try it so I'm not even going to bother. If you are a white wine person the classic ubiquitous Chardonnay with a moderate amount of oak is delish and probably the best day to drink it. Nothing wrong with a nice bottle of sparkling either......

Stay Classy Johnson County!!

The best wine I drank this week: Veuve Cliquot Rose Champagne

Where I drank it: Home at Ameristar. A Nightclub in St. Charles, Missouri

Price: $245 a bottle. Quite a rip off considering you can get it at retail for about $80.

Thoughts: Rose Champagne is incredible and I rarely get to drink it but when I ordered it I knew immediately it would have to be my best wine of the week. This is dry with beautiful explosions of rose pedals, delicate fresh red fruits. The bubbles were delicate. It was very clean with a small amount of yeasty, toasty notes. Really incredible.

The Olbermann Wine. The worst wine I had this week: Folie a Deux Menage a Trois 2005.

Where I drank it: 810 Sportszone, Leawood, Kansas

Price: $24 a bottle. Probably like $13.99 in a wine shop.

Thoughts: I've had this red blend several times in past vintages. It is a blend of Zinfandel, Cab and Merlot if I remember correctly. It used to be pretty damn good especially for the money and I liked it because the unique red blends seem to be becoming more rare especially at a good price. Unfortunately, Folie a Deux has gone astray and the wine is now really light, lacking any weight which must be a trick to accomplish using those varietals. It also lacks interesting flavors and the nose is well slightly grapey.....in a bad way. It used to be jammy but I keep coming back to lighter and thinner than previous versions. So, be careful. If this is a wine you used to look to for a good solid red......it isn't anymore. It is almost like they kept the price the same but started using cheaper grapes and little or no oak. Hmmmmm.......what next? Only putting 23 ounces in the bottle instead of 25 oz? A rip off.

Cheers and Vaya Con Dios! Have a great weekend.

What about bacon flavored wine?

Great thought. 2 things I really like.....

I've had some Pinot Noirs that definitely have that smoked bacon aroma so that is kinda out there already but one dedicated to smelling like bacon.....I like it. I like it alot.

Thanks for commenting.
