Recycling Glass

I'll keep this short today because I'm not much of a public service blog..........

Deffenbaugh is switching in our neighborhood to provided waste receptacles and you will only be allowed that one 65 gallon container per week and you will have to pay for stickers for additional bags in additional to an increase in fees. Recycling will remain unlimited but they did send out a reminder of what is acceptable for the recycling bin. It is worthwhile to read because we've been putting some stuff in there that they don't want.....specifically those plastic salad tubs I get at the grocery salad bar.

They also don't take glass which I already knew. It says you can go to their site to find where you can take glass but I found it difficult to navigate and find the answers I wanted. I was interested because well.....we haven't started drinking wine from boxes yet and we have quite a bit of glass each week. I had read some propaganda that nobody would take glass anymore and that it cost more to reprocess it than make new but then I saw on the Johnson County Community College Channel last night that it does help and then it serendipitously all fell into place when I got today's email from Deffenbaugh. Awwww.....give mother earth a hug please........

I was interested in finding places where I could take my glass and I thought somebody else might be as well. Nobody will pay for your glass so there is no financial opportunity. If you want to collect it and take it someplace there is a good resource on http://www.recyclespot.org/. I think it is the Mid American Regional Council who supports the site. You have to separate it by color (pain in the ass) but at least they will take it. They also take your batteries and fluorescent bulbs among other things.

Wow, we in Olathe must be ahead of the curve! We've had those 65 gallon carts for a couple of years now! I just wish my neighbors would keep theirs INSIDE!

We switched to their 65 gal container earlier last year. It holds more than I thought it would although some people complained it wasn't enough AND THEY WILL NOT ACCEPT ANYTHING BESIDES THAT CONTAINER. If it doesn't fit, you have to wait till the first Friday of the month or whatever your plan calls for. We don't recycle here. We can throw anything in there except for hazardous materials. Our city decided it wasn't worth the extra cost :-) I know, I'm a heathen but I don't care.

Bill, you are dreaming about Olathe being ahead of the curve. They are the last city in JOCO to pick up their own trash and while the 65 gallon can might have been early the fact that they still don't do curbside recycling offsets it.

We, the elitist of Leawood, specifically don't allow cans to be kept outside.

I was raised in Olathe so I feel your pain.

I'm in Lenexa and we have heard nothing of these barrels and limits. I take all of my recycling to the Deffenbaugh center on 119th & Hardy. As long as you have your stuff organized well, it's easy to drop off everything in just a few minutes. I wouldn't recommend taking your paper there though because they want everything sorted out, unlike those bins in school/church parking lots.

I just put the different colors of glass on different sides of the container

I'm not sure all they are doing it everywhere but I know in our area it is a phased introduction and ours comes sometime this month.

I'm gonna start taking my glass down and letting them take everything else curbside cause they will.

JOCOEveryman - I am in Olathe and do curbside recycling every week? It costs me a little bit of $$$ to do it though, which annoys me.

Perhaps I was wrong about Olathe and curbside recycling....I was wrong a few months ago too....so it does happen.

Paying extra does stink when they make money off of it.

Thanks for setting me straight.
