I've always considered myself at least aware of most trends before Target knocks them off. As I've gotten older I've had to decide whether to participate or not :-)
There is a sign though when you know that almost all trends are truly almost effete and that is when they become entrenched as merely common place in the Midwest.
Such, I believe might just be the male skull cap or watch cap, worn indoors, er I mean all the time with anything but a coat. It reminds me just a little bit of the sorta preppy "sport a scarf" indoors look in high school in the 80's. Back then, a dude would make sure it had just a wiff of Calvin on hit............panty dropper! Throw in a Member's Only jacket and 3/4 those sleeves..........yeah. While not gone yet......signs might point to the fact that the skull cap trend might have at least shaken hands with the grim reaper this week. "Yo, Mr. Grim, I'm Skull...the cap. Uh, Nice to meet you?"
Why? When I'm seeing late 40's wannabe joco hipsters pushing twins in a Walmart and all three of them are wearing scull caps (that they probably bought there) I'm not sure but I'm sensing the end is near like Haley Joel Osment seeing dead people. I wish I had the guts to snap a stealthy camera phone picture for you. No.....it wasn't Grumpy Old Fart. Of course it is cold as hell out today but I see guys rocking this look inside, on a sunny day, and it is like 60 degrees out. I love fashion that works well with my "I didn't shower today" personal hygiene regimen. I actually saw country singer Tim McGraw wearing one in an interiew last week. Hipster Country Singers? Put the skull caps in the Walmart close out basket. If you get on it now you will be like the last guy to give Bernie Madoff your retirement account.
Another sure sign you can stick a fork in it for sure is when an old white guy like me starts to embrace the look as well, not shave for a couple days over holiday and think I'm starting to look like Colin Farrell :-)
I was talking with a friend recently who seems to always see the edge of fashion and he was saying in his travels to New York he is seeing a move among really swanky hipsters toward the top hat! Not the Fedora.....the Top Hat! Wouldn't that be something......? Top Hot.....then Abe Lincoln Stove Pipe Hat.....we'll see how tall they can get for guys trying to....um, er, overcompensate. We'll see......in the Midwest in about 3-4 years!
When in reality.....I probably look more like this...........

Crap, I just got one for Christmas!
Funny, so if it is finally hot in Kansas it is almost over.....got it.
I am fundamentally against any type of hat besides a ballcap outside of a costume party. This includes, but is not limited to fedoras, newsboys and berets.
